Before you sign: contract basics for creatives
A contract protects you as much as the person hiring you. Even for small gigs, get the deal in writing. An email that both of you agree to is better than nothing.
The five things to check
The fee. The exact amount, whether tax is included, and what it covers. Does it include travel, gear, rehearsals or revisions?
When you get paid. A date, not "after the event." For bigger jobs, ask for a deposit up front, often 25% to 50%.
Who owns the work. Do they get to use your song, photo or design once, or forever? Can they edit it? Can they sell it? You can license your work without giving away the rights
The deadlines. What's due, when, and how many rounds of changes are included.
Cancellation. If they cancel late, do you still get paid? A cancellation fee protects the time you've already set aside.
